  • These subjects have invited us into this short week's window of time to learn from and bear witness to their lives.

Two long-time farmers parallel the challenges dealt them—one says he is the luckiest man in Randolph County." Having led a full life, he fights cancer but continues work. The other, a recently widowed hog farmer, has made the decision to step aside and pass the farm to his sons.

Two hard-working women reflect the struggles of being a daughter and a mother. While campaigning for county judge, an attorney balances a full legal career with caring for her aging father. The other works endless hours holding down three jobs as a waitress to provide for her four children.

Our last two stories are about coming of age. Two 13-year olds girls find race doesn't matter although their friendship is at a turning point. The Greyhounds, a community college basketball team, portrays the difficulty of juggling personal responsibility against worldly temptations.

National Geographic Freelance Photographer Melissa Farlow and The Oregonian Senior Editor for Visuals Randy Cox guided Team E's efforts.
