Richard Schlanker hoped that retirement would bring him freedom. Instead, he's caring for his elderly parents -- running their errands and driving his father to and from a local nursing facility.

From his hilltop childhood home to the streets of downtown Macon, Schlanker carries this burden. His respite is irregular but reviving. It's derived from his involvement with the community and his afternoon ventures through the lush estate encompassing Theman's Lake.
