  • April Wonder McKinnon, 13, moved into her fathers' home in St. James six months ago. She misses her prior home in Alabama, but had to move because she lived an unstable life with her mother. In Alabama she was mostly taking care of herself. Now in St. James she shares the responsibilities of cooking and cleaning with her father and brother who is temporarily living in the house. In a lower middle class neighborhood April's house is small and humble.

April's father Danny, a Vietnam veteran, is a self-employed tree trimmer who often prepares breakfast and dinner for the family. Her brother LeRoy has spent a little over thirteen years in prison and is currently between jobs. LeRoy has hope to work on a ship as an engineer in the near future.

April's immediate community is very small and tight nit. April spends time after school with her friends, primarily her best friend Carley Treece. April and Carley say that their relationship is very close, but they both love and hate each other. April's next door neighbor, Mervin Roger's, comes over to her house to spend time with her family.

Here, April walks into her home after school.
