Danielle Burse got into trouble easily. She swore, she backtalked to school administrators and got into fights with other students. Her behavior got her expelled from Louisiana High School in accordance with Missouri's Safe Schools Act, and she spent her entire junior year prohibited from the school campus.
In place of a traditional high school schedule, Danielle began one-on-one instruction with Satellite Teacher Kathy Radcliff at the public library. In the beginning, Kathy wasn't sure how successful Danielle would be. "I had doubts about whether she'd stay with the program and commit herself," she said.
Five and a half months ago, Danielle's world turned upside down. Long labor brought a baby boy named Christopher into her life, and encouraged her to make some important changes.
Danielle still attends class at the public library, but now sees it as an opportunity rather than as a punishment. She speaks with pride about what she's doing and what she hopes to accomplish. "A couple of years ago, I never thought I could make it through to graduation," she said. "Now, I'll be the first one of six kids to graduate."
