At the age of two and a half, a life-threatening bout with spinal meningitis left 10 year-old Tyler Henson without the ability to hear. It also left his parents, Greg and Michelle Henson with a serious problem – how to make sure that Tyler could get the skills he would need to survive in a world without sound. In 1999, they pulled up roots and moved to Fulton, enrolling Tyler in the Missouri School for the Deaf, the oldest educational institution for hearing impaired children west of the Mississippi. While the family has to work three jobs to ends meet, they know their sacrifice is a fair trade for their son’s future in a world now full of promise.
