In every family there is a tie that binds. Betty and Jerry Vickery believe they were joined together 25 years ago by God.
“We have felt when God brings two people together they are meant to be a family and be willing to receive as many people as they can,” said Betty Vickery.
Betty and Jerry have received 11 children ranging in age from 24 to 3 months old. Jude, Danielle, Joses, Michael, Emma, Levi, Robin, Tiona, Patience, Christopher, and Journey have been accepted with loving and open arms. The eight youngest children live with their parents in a basement in New Bloomfield, Mo. The family has been working together for 15 years to finish a house above the basement to give the family more space. The 10 members of the family share three bedrooms, one bathroom and one family room. Although they live in a confined area, each member of the unit finds their own time and space for solitude.
While Jerry is working as a general contractor to support a family of 10, Betty home schools all of the children. The parents believe in being completely responsible for their children’s upbringing.
After school, the children run around their home as worker bees to do their chores, with a little nudging from their mother. “We try to have as many of us as we can helping out ,” said 11-year-old Robin.
The Vickery’s have found through 24 years of parenting that faith and love are what keep the family together.
“When good parents raise a family with close family relationships, said Betty Vickery. ”It can have an effect that compounds across generations.”
