Kim Komenich currently divides his time between shooting and serving as the San Francisco Chronicle's photo coach. He worked for Hearst's San Francisco Examiner from 1982-2000 and has continued to work for Hearst's San Francisco Chronicle since the Nov, 2000 merger. Komenich graduated from San Jose State University in 1979 with a BA in Journalism. He was a 1993-94 Knight Fellow at Stanford University. He iscurrently finishing his graduate project at Mizzou. He received the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Philippine revolution, the 1983 World Press Photo award for news picture stories and the 1987 SPJ national distinguished service award. He has received two National Headliner awards. He taught a class in Street Photography during his semester as a teaching fellow at U.C. Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism in fall, 2001. He taught courses in Staff Photojournalism and Picture Story/Photographic Essay as a visiting instructor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism from 1998-2000. He taught Documentary Photography at the San Francisco Academy of Art College from 1987-1998. His freelance work has appeared in LIFE, Time, People, Fortune, Newsweek and many international news magazines.He was among the photographers contributing to "A Day In the Life of California," "Power to Heal," and "One Digital Day." This is Komenich's eighth year at the workshop; he was a participant in 1991.
